The best thing that seems to work is a compound that consists of a penetrating oil to provide conditioning to the board as well as a wax that acts as as a protective barrier for the board.
In order to meet those two requirements, my board butter is a mixture of mineral oil and beeswax. It is completely food-safe and perfect for protecting the life of your board.
